Randy recommends:

• Using a jerk-pause-jerk retrieve with varied pause lengths.
• Targeting deeper transition areas, bluff walls, and suspended fish.
• Letting the bait suspend naturally during the pause — many strikes happen when the lure is sitting still. 
• Using lighter line to help the bait reach its full diving depth and maintain a more natural action. 

 In colder water or pressured conditions, Randy suggests extending pauses up to 5–10 seconds to give bass time to commit to the bait.
